How Do People Radicalize?

How do people radicalize themselves? What role does language play? What can we do?

Christians, Jews and Muslims in conversation with Pia Beckmann

Anti-Semitism, Islamization, terrorist attacks, as recently in Christchurch - these are phenomena that are currently occupying people and the media. In addition, there is xenophobia, extremism and populism, a drifting apart of our society and a questioning of democratic values as well as diffuse fears.
In Mannheim, 43 percent of the people have a migration background. The inhabitants come from 160 nations. The religious and cultural diversity is enormous. There are many forms of coexistence. Nevertheless, integration remains one of them. And: extremism worries many.

"Together with Dr. Pia Beckmann, linguist and founder of the democracy initiative pics4peace e.V., we invite Christians, Jews and Muslims, but also people of other faiths and non-believers, to go along the religions, with us, on the traces of language, thinking and doing.
Using examples, the guests will discover what language does to us and how language influences our thinking. Participants are invited to share their own experiences and reflect with the speaker on what everyone can do to reduce prejudice, improve dialogue, and promote togetherness.

The evening is aimed at everyone who is disturbed by current developments,"

say the inviting organizations, the Ecumenical Education Center sanctclara, the Jewish Community Mannheim and the Society for Dialogue Baden Württemberg in Mannheim.
